1 channel video, 168 hours and 1 channel video as label of artwork, 47 minutes
collaboration with Regis Golay
11AM, performance - documentary-videos installation by Cam Xanh and Régis Golay.
Description: season 1 - 7 episodes (47 minute each). 7 days continuously sleeping in 7 different air bnbs in saigon. Everyday, shoot 1min video in slow motion at 11am, then stretch the 1 min to 47 minutes a woman, alone/or not but look like aloneness in an airbnb room made up to her taste.
11am, an hour before checking out, already packed possibly, not enough time to do much but a cup of coffee before get dressed and move on.. of course a vietnamese dripping is the most common possibility right there cause there’s no room service at airbnb. a minute waiting for the coffee waiting for check out.. a bit of regret to leave, maybe not, a bit of excitement to move on, maybe not.. maybe just thinking a bit of last night, tonight, tomorrow night..
in the alienation of the surroundings is there a possibility to feel belonging, or the very version of self becomes stranger, evidence of absences is so presence, she’s inspecting a stranger life underneath all the makeup or she’s making up a version of herself in a stranger bedroom, is it the self-recreation or self-destruction everyday her skin are yellow.. it’s looking golden but also ill. during that one minute, she breathes slowly..
maybe 3, or 6times, stress it to 47 minutes .. she will breath once every 20mins, is life still possible within!?
how long had she spent waiting if a min is 47 minutes.. few lives, probably..
if a minute is 47 minutes she might have lived/or died since/forever
an alternative version of infinity
time is what she needs..
at 11am.. everyday, she timelessly think of time.
at 11am.. everyday, she waits, timelessly..nothing is wasted
Global Citizens Stuck in Alley 47
We are global citizens, each sporting hair, teeth; some even grow beards, shave heads; and nearly all dangle handphones. We are bloodhounds, especially for all things rotten. We are pleased with the word being, as it is the language of The Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird. We are proud of the word decapitation, as it is the language of The Three Kingdoms. But we are extremely ashamed of the word Uncle with its echoes, as it is the language of the wretch Chí Phèo. Of course we read like mad, eat perfunctorily, and make love meagerly. We not only know the direct, diagonal, but also the circuitous meaning of words. For example Saigon, its direct meaning is Saigon. Its diagonal meaning is lacking. Its circuitous meaning is Hochiminh City. In addition, we also know how to punctuate, babble, imitate, mock, deconstruct, and be the professionally unemployed. That is why things that should be thown out, we store them all in our heads. We are faithful to the phrase: diligent pickin’ leads to a full bag. We gradually lose the ability to distinguish what is trash, what is recyclables, but we know John Cage died in 1992, Susan Sontag had thick black hair, South Vietnamese Vice President Nguyễn Cao Kỳ got police escort to his hotel when he came back to Saigon, and Thích Nhất Hạnh stopped by the Già Lam temple only to find the dissident monk Tuệ Sỹ going into seclusion. We always improve our morals by surfing the internet: sex webpages besides diasporic sites Tienve and Talawas. On occasions, we happily go abroad, the farthest place is New York, the closest is Angkor. In New York, we
crave phở and miss our Vũ Đại village. In Angkor, we crave dog meat and miss our Alley 47. We reincarnate to crave and miss. In this life, we crave the global and miss a place the size of a buffalo hoofprint. The alley leads to the lair of a guerrilla goddess. Every time she patrols on her honda, in our heads echoes the line: a wandering life is exhausting. Eventhough we have hondas, yamahas, buses, and our feet ache less than those dragged along by our transient ancestors, our eyes blur and our feet go numb. Perhaps because we are citizens fortunately/unfortunately made global. Eventhough we have hair, teeth, and beards, our heads are empty of dialectics, so we go nowhere while our cocks and balls go hard. When you hear an explosion, don’t think of a terrorist attack here. We only loiter and have our guns ceased.
